INTRODUCTION

Farsi, also known as Persian, is spoken by about thirty-eightmillion people worldwide，

primarily in lran，but also inAfghanistan (where it is called Dari) 

and in the Central Asianrepublic of Tajikistan (where it is called Tajik).

Farsi belongs to the lndo-lranian branch of the lndo-Europeanlanguage family 

and is closely related to Pashto and Kurdish,and more distantly to Sanskrit，

Hindi,and Bengali. WhileFarsi is written in the Arabic script 

and has borrowed a largeamount of vocabulary from Arabic，

Farsi and Arabic areunrelated.English and Farsi，however，

have a commonanoestor: lndo-European.
